Planting Seeds and Growing in Faith

We had been wanting to start some plants with seeds this year. Not only did I know that it would help us try out things that we couldn't find as starter plants in the store, but I also knew that it would be a fabulous project for the kids.

But, we still ended up putting it off. Finally, one day, I just said, "Let's do some planting!" and we began on an fun science experience for the day.

I let the kids plant almost all of the seeds. We made a grid so we would know what seeds we planted in which cells. Hey...science and math. Pretty tricky, huh? (Seriously though -- we had already done math workbooks for the day. Oh, the excitement.)

The kids kept a close eye for growth in our mini greenhouse contraption that we picked up at Walmart.

Although they probably thought it seemed like forever, it was not long before we were treated to some sprouting. The kids were amazed and delighted. And, you know what? Eric and I were pretty darn amazed and delighted too.

Just a few days later, the seedlings have been growing like crazy! We can look at the tray and then when we walk back a few hours later, and they are bigger! Plus, we all think it's a hoot to watch the plants move toward light.

And, to think, I came so close to just picking up starter plants instead of starting the seeds that I had purchased. Look at how much richer we are for not having done that. Not only did we not spend more money, but we have been able to watch in amazement at the utter awesomeness of God's creation. And that is something that money just can't buy.

This is such a great idea, I wish I'd thought of it weeks ago. Maybe I can still get a head start, we won't be able to plant seeds directly in the ground for warm weather crops for almost another month now.

thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the motivation! I have had plants sitting on my kitchen table for 2 weeks. I just push the unplanted seeds and pots out of the way for meals--maybe this will help me find the motivation to actually plant them!

Oh, what fun! Last year, my kids and I planted a bunch of seeds in old yogurt containers and pop bottles. It was so great to watch the little green things grow. They did great in our house, but after I planted them outside, they fell prey to the weather and some voracious bunnies! I hope your seedlings do much better than mine did! :)

This is the a first for me! I had experimented with saving seeds from fruits and vegetables I was buying at the store and now they've been planted and are starting to come up. It's great! I did have to spend about $50 buying starter plants for things I didn't have, but this will be the last year for that - I"m going to save seeds and start with those seeds next year!

What a fun activity! Gardening is so fun in the Spring. It's just not so much fun in July when it's too hot to think, let alone work outside. We are going to attempt it this year though. Good luck with your garden!

Pretty neat! I should've planted this year. We tried & failed, last year... we are going to plant flowers this weekend, though.

Hope you'll keep us posted on how they continue to grow!

Growing things is so much fun for kids and adults.

Have you seen the TOPS books? We've done "Corn and Beans" and "Radishes". They give specific directions for all types of experiments with plants and seeds, including charting and graphing the results. Our children loved them.

Blessings,
Kimberly

How fun to see this post! We just did this just 2 weeks ago, and are so excited with our results, too. I actually had to move some into a pot (to keep indoors) today because they were outgrowing their little starter packs!

For the very first time, we started seeds this year, too. It has been AMAZING to see them sprout up so quickly - and now we're itching to get them in the ground, but we've got to wait a couple more weeks.
