WFMW: Making Cereral Last Longer

I'm sure in some houses, cereal is gone through like water. Not so much in our house. We like cereal, but we were always apt to end up throwing away partially eaten boxes of cereal because they were stale.

One day when I was at Target, I saw some cereal keeper containers (or, really for anything that would fit in them, I suspect). I didn't know if I could make myself by them -- they were around $7 - $8 each! But, I finally sucked it up and bought a few.

Wow -- can I just say that these are DEFINITELY worth the money spent! The other day, the kids wanted Cheerios. I am positive that it has been at least a few months since I opened that box originally, but there they were -- crunchy and just like I had opened the box yesterday.

These are great for the household that likes the occasional box of cereal (or that likes to have several types of cereal open at once).

Yeah, I've been eye-balling those containers for months, but just can't seem to fork out the cash. Maybe I should just break down. Hopefully I'll be just as pleased as you!

Bummer. We're one of those cereal-like-water families. I was hoping you had some great trick to making "cereal filler" that would help stretch it out longer. Sigh. Back to the old drawing board... :)

Cereal keepers are great, though, even if you eat it alot, because then you're likely to have 8-10 different containers of cereal in your cupboard. We used them growing up--I think ours were from Tupperware, but I have no idea if they still make them (or how much they'd cost).

Happy Wednesday!

I will definitely need to look into these! Thanks for the heads up.

Fantastic tip! We have tons of cereal boxes that have been sitting in our closet for ages.

Plus, this gives me another excuse to go to Target. :-)

We have two of the containers and what I like about them is it forces me to only have 2 kinds of cereal going at one time. No more 1/2 filled bags in my cupboard. Plus I always buy the giant economy bags and my kids don't even know that it isn't "real" cheerios or rice krispies.

That's funny, when I read the title I'm thinking, "What? Get rid of my husband?"

Because the only way to make it last longer here is to get rid of The Mouth.

However, once I understood what you meant I totally agree, we have those containers and they're great. Less mess too.

When our cereals get down to the last half or quarter serving, I pour all of them together in one container. The kids love the "mixed up" version!

When my wife and I were living together, she's now in the province with our newborn (a hard decision for us), we always have cereal together in the morning. Yup, cereals do easily get damaged when not sealed tightly. When I bought my wife a can of ice cream one time, the 1.5 ltr can became our cereal container. I just came back from the province after a month and still found the cereal in good condition. Ice cream cans are recyclable! :-)
