What is Mumbling?

The kids were talking in the van as we were getting out, so I said, "What?"

Noah replied, "Jack was just mumbling to himself."

This made Molly ask, "What is mumbling?"

Noah answered, "Mumbling is when you are silently saying something to yourself but somebody else hears and asks what you said.  Then you tell them, 'Oh, nothing.'"

Apparently mumbling only happens in very specific situations.

Like when you send one of your kids to the corner for being naughty and they sit there "mumbling".

And then you holler at them "boy, you'd better not be talking smack about me!" from the other room.

Theoretically, I mean.

This is excellent! My sister used to do something like that. She had a store of made-up words to mumble, then when Mom would ask her what she said, she'd answer (in perfect honesty) "Nothing." Drove Mom crazy then. We all get a good laugh out of it now!
