Protecting Your Refrigerator While Thawing Meat (Works for Me Wednesday)

I just posted this tip as a comment on someone else's blog, and then I thought, "Hang on...maybe I should go ahead and post it on my own blog too!"

So, here's my friendly tip about safely thawing meat (or really anything) in your refrigerator while also keeping your refrigerator clean...

One thing that I think is important to remember for helping to keep your refrigerator cleaner is to always put things you are thawing on a plate or in a bowl.

Yes, I know -- sometimes space in a refrigerator can be a precious commodity, and adding in a plate or bowl takes up more room. But, it is REALLY worth it!

I had one time that I was thawing a roast in the refrigerator and am SO thankful I had it sitting in a bowl because the bowl ended up with blood/juices all in the bottom -- the package had leaked while thawing.

Eeewwwww!

If I had just had that sitting on a refrigerator shelf, not only would it have been a huge mess to clean up, it would have been seriously unsanitary!

So, lose a little space in your refrigerator with a bowl or plate, or maybe even a small bin specifically for throwing in things that you are thawing (if you thaw a lot). But, save yourself the future headache (and potential health risk) of having a horrible leak!

Great tip! If you're tight on space, you could also just put whatever you are thawing into a plastic grocery store bag. (As an added bonus, if it leaks, you can just throw the bag away!)

Great tip, I always forget to do this and then I end up having to take apart my fridge to scrub it out when the meat leaks. YUCK!

I started thawing meat in a dish after having to take a drawer out of the fridge, soak it overnight and scrub it the next day to get all the dried juices out of it. Yuck!

I always try to thaw in a ziploc then in a tupper container or bowl, too. I also read another great tip somewhere-always thaw on the lowest shelf possible. That way if it drips, it's less likely to contaminate the other food in the fridge. (like you mentioned w/ your roast;)

Thanks for sharing!

great tip! I normally do it with the frozen meat but now it is an absolute must here to do that with any meat! Just the other day I pulled out a pkg of fresh meat that I bought at Sam's that I forgot to put something under it only to have the juices run all over in the fridge, the floor and my clean pants!

Needless to say I learned my lesson on forgetfulness! :)

I always do this too - the possible mess is SO not worth it!

When I buy meat (usually in bulk) I break it into portion sizes and then break out the foodsaver and seal it up. When I need to thaw it the meat is already in a sealed package so there is no chance of leaking. I know that they may seem like an expensive tool but I swear by mine and it has saved me tons of money because I never ever get freezer burn on anything.

I vacuum seal pretty much everything...meat, cheese, veggies, bananas for banana bread and so much more. Once it is sealed I use a trusty sharpie to lable and date it and toss it into the freezer.

If you have the means to get a food sealing machine get one. They are awesome!

Great tip! I had a roast once that leaked and the blood/juices got into the door gasket. Yeah, cleaned and cleaned and cleaned and finally bought a new fridge.

I have learned that tip the hard way. :-)

And thanks for your dream interpretation. I like your idea much better than the one I got. And said so on my blog!
