Whew! How about a migraine...or two?

This week has brought about a new experience for me -- and it actually brought it twice. This lovely new experience has kept me away from the computer a bit as well.

On Monday night while I was alone with the kids (Eric had taken one of his very rare business trips), and as Noah and I sat while he read a book aloud to me for homework, I suddenly had horrible sinus-type pain on only one side of my head/neck. I have to admit, I couldn't help but run to the bathroom to be sure I didn't droop on one side of my face. Seriously -- it's not like I thought I had a stroke, but I was concerned. (Apparently, I will add, it wasn't a crazy thing to check, because when I saw my doctor today, he asked me several questions to verify that I hadn't had a stroke. Crazy, huh?)

Once I finally got the kids to bed (they were so darn good, actually, because I begged them to be good because I felt so bad), I laid in pain until I was finally able to sleep. And, then I slept until noon the next day (thanks to Eric being home).

When I woke up, I was finally better! WooHoo! Well...I thought I was better.

Turns on that then on Wednesday afternoon while running errands, the headache came back. It was different this time, and then I became very sensitive to sound and light. I asked Eric to come home early and slept from 3 pm until 8:30 pm. This was, of course, because I sobbed to him and he ended up calling the doctor for me to see him the next day (today).

The doctor said that it certainly sounded like migraines, and actually offered me something injectable in the office. (I declined, since I only had a dull headache at the time.) I have now started on my FOURTH set of antibiotics since December!

At this point, I'm just praying that this migraine thing was a one (or two) time event. And, let's hope that the fourth time is a charm on the antibiotics!

I hope you are feeling better! I went through the same thing on Saturday, forcing us to leave a restaurant as I had the added bonus of feeling like I was going to throw up. This was only my second in maybe 4 years, so here's praying you don't have another one for many years to come!

Oh, Sweetie!!! Migraines and motherhood truly don't mix ... fortunately, it is a malady that can be managed well with sufficient self-care. (I take a daily dose of Nortryptaline to keep mine at bay, and it works like a charm. Now I only get them once or twice a month, and they go away in an hour if I take the Maxalt/Excedrine Migraine combo.)

The thing about migraines is that different things set them off for each person. Try eliminating diet triggers (shellfish, citrus fruit, red wine, dark chocolate, aged meat and aged cheese), drink LOTS of water, and get enough exercise to counteract stress. If you wake up with a headache, be sure to get some protein in your system (peanut butter crackers works if you're also nauseated.)

There are also environmental issues to consider. Some people find fluxuations in air pressure (just before it snows or rains is especially difficult) can bring them on. For me, it's lack of sleep. (That's where self-care comes in.)

Sensitivity to light and sound, combined with nausea ... all very common. The good news is that, with a little practice, you can begin to anticipate what brings on the attacks, and find ways to cut them off at the pass.

Get thee to a doctor, and get yourself on some reliable migraine meds. This is NO time to suffer silently. It simply isn't necessary -- and has too profound effect on family life. When mom is sick, the whole family suffers!

I'll be praying for you!
