I have always admired people who kept journals. I, however, am not one of those people. I am one of those people that will buy a gorgeous journal, write in it twice, and then putting it away in a drawer to never see the light of day again.
I took some comfort in the fact that I scrapbook, so my kids, their kids, etc. will be able to get some glimpse of our life, as seen through pictures and journaling.
Still...it didn't seem like enough. Well...especially since I often don't journal on my scrapbook pages.
Then, I started blogging. I started recording little snippets of our daily life. This blog contains what we eat, cute things the kids say, illnesses, gifts given, school struggles -- it is a portrait of our family at this moment.
Still -- it's not like I can expect that my great-grandchildren will be able to check out my blog online. So, I have been having each entry I make emailed to me (it's an option through Blogger), and I have been printing most of them out and keeping them all together. This is finally a journal that I don't stick away in a drawer to never see again. Sure -- my great-grandchildren may not care what we ate each week or what "works for me," but, you know what? They might.
Or...if you don't want to print them out, you can always try a book of your blog entries through Blurb.com. I will admit that I actually got really behind in printing out my blog entries (though I have them in a "to print" file in my email). And, so Eric and I discussed it, and instead of printing all of my posts, I just ordered a hard back book of the entries from December 2006 (when I started my blog) through December 2007. I have plans for a 2008 book at the end of the year. My book is actually set to be delivered on Friday this week!
I know this doesn't work for every blog, but if you record your family happenings on your blog, you might consider printing them out or even putting them in a book to record a glimpse of your family for the future.

I clicked on the comment that you left for my sister on her blog, "The Grasshopper" about her WFMW. I loved your post. This is exactly why I decided to start blogging. When my DH grandmother passed away two years ago, we found a journal that she wrote her day to day happenings in. Everyone loved reading it. She listed how much she paid for things, what the doctor said, how she felt, all little trivial things that us grandkids and great grandkids loved reading!!

Blurb is SO COOL. It is totally cost effective when you think you get one of those CM albums empty for $40 and you can get a nice hard back 8X10 for $60. You don't have to buy any cropping tools, any special paper, or markers. HA!

This is kinda creepy. I literally was laying in bed last night and decided to print out all of my blog entries. I like your idea of having them printed and put in a book every year. I love scrapbooking, but I am so behind. Another thing I do for my children is "Friday Letters" I actually got the idea from the book Wednesday Letters, I know I'm so original, but I bought 2 journals and every Friday I write a letter each journal. My son has his own and my daughter has her own.
How did you like using Blurb? I used to be an avid journaler and have just run out of time but I do blog daily. I've looked for ways to print and Was it easy to convert your blog over to their pages?
I really liked using Blurb. It was easy to transfer my blog entries into their system. And, then it's easy to deselect some entries, as well as to edit your blog entries in the book.
My book with shipping was in the neighborhood of $50. That was with me doing a lot of editing to try to make sure there were multiple entries on one page, etc.
It's scheduled to arrive tomorrow, so I'll have to post about it!
